Peace Corps

0 min read
(Wow, have not updated this journal, in like, forever.) I am currently in my second year of my Peace Corps Service. My country of service is Kazakhstan. For the past year I had been experimenting with new forms of expressions (I am aware of how corny that sounds) and after spending a fortune of my Peace Corps salary (which is not a lot) on paints, paper and glue I decided that it would probably be better if I gave illustrator a try. So I did and am having lots of fun. Kazakhstan is not at all like the Borat movie (or so they tell me as I have not seen it). It is an interesting country sandwiched between Russia and the rest of Central Asia.

What happens to printmakers right out of school? Well, If you are in the state of Washington or Alaska, arrangements can be made with one of the universities. Might take a bit of time but you might be able to find a suitable arrangement. But if you are in the state of Florida, there is hardly such luck. Not a lot of Universities open up to people who are not enrolled. It has something to do with insurance, which non-students do not have. So, I was not finding any place that would allow me to work. I did not know many artists in the area, so I started to bully (in a nice way) artists on the street. There had to be somebody out there who knew

In with the new. I just recently uploaded some of my new stuff. Mostly screen prints in their original form they are now enjoying new life as jpgs files on the web. Currently I am in Alaska and can see how closely art is tied to nature. I guess it does not take much to figure that one out, except that I find that Alaska is able to incorporate it in much more subtle ways than, let's say, Florida. Hardly anything has striked me as overblown and/or tacky. Now if I could just leave Anchorage... I am hoping to make it to Fairbanks or to the Artic Circle
